Cinema Theatre Association Visits Picture House
Posted on 04 August 2009

On 19th July, fifty seven members of the Cinema and Theatre Association (CTA) arrived on the PS Waverley to pay a visit to the Picture House. The trip was the highlight of the group's visit to entertainment buildings on the Clyde.

The group were greeted on arrival and led into the auditorium where they were welcomed by a member of the Board of Directors and then handed over to William Crossan who gave a short talk. Mr Crossan was the chairperson of the Picture House and Campbeltown Community Business during the 1990's. He recalled memories of his family connections with the Picture House when he was a boy and also described the Picture House before 1935.

The visitors were then entertained with two silent films from a bygone era. The first was the very short Scottish Screen Archive clip from the Campbeltown film which lasts about four minutes - this being all that remains of the original film. The second film was a documentary of the construction of the Ritz Cinema in Edinburgh in the late 1920's. The Ritz was one of the first cinemas to be purpose built for the "Talkies". To compliment the films and create a real silent film atmosphere David McEwan played original piano music which was composed for the silent film era.

Dr Gordon Barr of the CTA, who organised the trip said, "Our members have been on many trips, and visited many cinema buildings over the years, but we can honestly say we've never received a warmer welcome anywhere than we did in Campbeltown."
"While we'd have been very happy with a quick look round the stunning and hugely historically important building, the team at the Picture House really went that extra mile to put on a fantastic show for us - archive film footage, live piano accompaniment, and even a very nice glass of wine!"
"Many, many thanks to the whole team at the Picture House."
